Review of Full Sail Brewing’s “Bump in the Night”

This offering from Full Sail Brewing company is available January to mid-March and new for 2011 and is a “American Black Ale” formerly Black IPA see our post of new beer styles for 2011 http://hoochandhops.com/2011/01/12/brewers-association-announces-2011-beer-style-guidelines/

This newly dubbed American Black Ale clocks in at 6.5% ABV and 65 IBUs.  I poured this beer into one of my many snifter glasses that the wife loves take up 3 shelves in our cabinet.  BITN, that is what I call my new friend for short, pours a deep dark brown not so much black.

The nose is of pine, citrus, a ton of chocolate notes, very earthy and aromatic.  Picture going snowboarding through a Christmas tree farm with some dark chocolate, does that even make sense? ah who cares, it is the best analogy I can come up with right now.

The taste is very smooth, so delicious reminds me of a nice IPA but not your typical west coast hop bomb, this is balanced with strong coffee, chocolate, maltiness. Great new seasonal offering from Full Sail if you see it pick it up, Full Sails distribution reaches to the east coast so many can partake because it won’t be here again until next year!

Cheers, Frank
